Council tax after completion

sorry if this is a really basic question but i completed on my first flat about two weeks ago and i’m not sure what i need to do about council tax. My solicitor mentioned something about it during completion but honestly there was so much paperwork flying around that day i didn’t take it in properly.

Do i need to contact the council myself to register, or does it happen automatically when the land registry updates? i’ve not had any letters or bills yet and i’m a bit worried i’m going to end up with a fine or something for not paying. Also not sure if there’s a discount for living on my own, i think i’ve heard of that but no idea how to apply.

thanks

You need to ring them yourself, it won’t happen automatically. Just call the council tax department and give them your completion date. They’ll set up the account and backdate it. There’s a 25% single person discount if you live alone, you just tick a box on the form or tell them when you call. Don’t worry about a fine, they’re used to people taking a few weeks to sort it.

Thank you @halfpenny_doris, rang them this morning and it’s all sorted. they even mentioned the single person discount which i didn’t know was a thing so bonus
